As we move into the LCFF/LCAP era support for California’s Alternative High Schools take on increased significance.  LCFF’s focus on EL, low income, and foster youth make up the majority of an Alternative High School’s student body.  To help meet a school district’s LCAP priorities in Pupil Engagement, School Climate, and Pupil Achievement, Alternative High Schools must be able to support students at the highest level.  This presentation will primarily cover the condition of Continuation Education in California – the good and the bad.  The other primary alternative programs will also be addressed.  Various data will be covered, including how graduation and dropout rates are affected by Continuation High Schools.  Best practices in California Model Schools will be highlighted with strategies to elevate alternative schools from being “bad” to schools that offer students a positive environment for a second chance.
